Magistrate Mohd Nor Hafidzuddin Yusoff also ordered Riska Putri, 20, and Hendra, 35, to pay duty of RM2,068 and RM1,815.20, respectively, to the Customs Department for the cigarettes that were found in their possession, in default seven days jail.
They were ordered to serve thejail sentence from the date of their arrest, which was last Jan 17.
Riska and Hendra had pleaded guilty to separate charges , with Riska charged with possession of 446 packets of cigarettes of various brands, worth RM944.96, at Al Hafiq Enterprise, G-57, Jalan PUJ 3/9, Taman Puncak Jalil, Seri Kembangan, here at 7.37 pm last Jan 17.
Hendra was charged with possession of 371 packets of cigarettes from 20 different brands, worth RM825.44, by roadside in front of Pangsapuri Enggang, Jalan Kinrara 6F, Bandar Kinrara Puchong, here at 7 pm on the same day.
In mitigation, Riska, represented by lawyer Mohd Syazwan Mohd Hassan, said his client wanted to return to her homeland, while Hendra, unrepresented, said his wife had just given birth a month ago.
In the same court, a Pakistani man, Hussain Abid, 24, pleaded not guilty to possession of 152 packets of smuggled cigarettes, worth RM256.80, at Pasar Raya Syed, G-1-8, Blok G, Pangsapuri Enggang, Bandar Kinrara, Puchong,here at 7 pm on the same day.
Mohd Nor Hafidzuddin allowed Hussain, represented by lawyer Sri Murugan, bail of RM3,500 in one surety and also ordered him to report himself at the Customs Department’s Enforcement Division in Port Klang, Selangor once a month., as well as surrender his passport to the court.
The court set Feb 13 for mention.
