Magistrate Muhammad ‘Azzam Zainal Abidin also ordered Ridhwan, 31, and Munzir, 22, (both one name only) to serve six months jail if they failed to pay the fine.
The court also ordered Ridhwan to pay import duty to the director-general of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (Customs) amounting to RM1,232 or serve a month’s jail, while Munzir was ordered to pay import duty amounting to RM1,726.80 or serve two months imprisonment.
Other than that, Muhammad 'Azzam also ordered all the cigarettes to be forfeited to the Malaysian government for the purpose of disposal and the two accused were referred to the Immigration Department for further action.
According to the charge, Ridhwan was charged with having 341 packs of contraband cigarettes of different brands valued at RM622.40 at a retail shop in Taman Sri Andalas here about 4 pm on April 12.
Meanwhile, Munzir was charged with possessing 513 packs of contraband cigarettes of different brands worth RM1,046.16 at a retail shop in Taman Sri Andalas here at 3.50pm on the same day (April 12).
