Magistrate Herlina Muse meted out the fine on Mustafa Koral, 67, after he pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a maximum fine of RM10,000 and imprisonment of up to 12 months.
The court also ordered the driving licence of Mustafa, who works as a hearse driver, to be suspended.
Mustafa was accused of driving a Hyundai Getz in a reckless and dangerous manner at the Batu 5 wet market area, Jalan Apas about 4.40 pm on Jan 19.
Based on the facts of the case, he was driving from the Al-Raudahtul Jannah mosque direction towards his house when he accidentally stepped on the accelerator while trying to slow down at a narrow lane of the wet market area which was lined with stalls on both sides.
He then lost control of his car and crashed into stalls at the market before hitting Abdul Rahman Paddu and his three-year-old son Ahmad Abdullah, who were buying fruits from one of the stalls.
The father and son were seriously injured in the incident.
The case was prosecuted by prosecuting officer ASP Joan Lee.
