On December 6 last year, five men stopped a boy and girl riding a motorcycle who were students of Yatanarpon Cyber City Technological University.
One of the men hit the boy with a piece of wood and the others grabbed the motorcycle and the girl’s bag. The boy died at the scene.
Hmone Gyi was sentenced to death for armed robbery resulting in death and to 10 years in prison for armed robbery.
Nga Soe and Sue Sha were sentenced to 20 years and 10 years in prison, respectively. Nyi Nyi Aung was sentenced to seven years in prison by a juvenile court. A fifth suspect is still at large and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
“Although the accused were charged under the same section of the Penal Code, they received different sentences due to their roles in the crime. Four of the five who were involved in the crime have now been dealt with by the law,” said Daw Thandar Shin, news and information officer for Pyin Oo Lwin township court.
The trial started on January 7 and involved 10 hearings before the verdict was reached.
