TANJUNG MALIM, March 26 (Bernama) - A student from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam was crowned champion of the ASEAN Oratory Competition for the Aminuddin Baki Trophy, organised by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).
Adam Muhammad Taufiq Mohamad Suharto, 21, a diploma programme student from UiTM's Faculty of Creative Writing beat six other contestants in the final today.
The speech titled 'Warisan ASEAN-Identity Kita' (ASEAN Heritage, Our Identity) saw the contestant take home a cash prize of RM1,000 and a trophy.
The prize was presented by Perak Youth Council deputy president, Mohd Zaidi Aziz.
The competition based on the theme 'Kesepakatan ASEAN' (ASEAN Solidarity) and held at the Sultan Azlan Shah Campus in Proton City, here, was to inculcate love for knowledge among students beyond the classroom.
Meanwhile, Mohd Zaidi in his speech said public speaking was important, and students should be exposed to it as the skill was one of the requirements to enter the job market.
