After the Cabinet meeting today, the Advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office Minister, Mr Natporn Jatusripitak, disclosed that the new draft Cane and Sugar Act proposed by the Ministry of Industry has been given an initial green light. He said the Cabinet considered the old version of the law obsolete as it had been in use since 1984.
The draft law incorporates several updates, such as a change in the definition of the term “cane juice” to allow it to be used for other purposes besides sugar production. The composition and responsibilities of the Cane and Sugar Board and the Cane and Sugar Fund Management Committee will be adjusted as well.
Moreover, the updated version of the law also sets the base price of sugarcane at 80 percent of the sales projection, with the ceiling at 95 percent, an improvement from the old version, which stipulates only the base price.
