Deputy prime minister for legal affairs Dr. Wissanu Krea-ngam said the cabinet had already sent its feedback on the amendment of the 1979 Narcotics Act to the lawmakers who will discuss it during next week’s sitting. According to Dr. Wissanu, the cabinet spent seven days reviewing the amendment before endorsing it.
Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong said the permanent secretary of the Commerce Ministry has formed a committee to review a petition from a private company seeking to patent cannabis extract. The petition was submitted to the ministry in 2010.
The minister pointed out that natural substances cannot be patented, but man-made substances that contain a psychoactive drug like marijuana can, once marijuana becomes legalized.
He added it is still too early to say whether the Department of Intellectual Property can or cannot deny the patent application.
