Thai, Cambodian Labor Ministers discuss Guideline for Migrant Workers Employment

Date: 07 July 2017; Type: Legal News; Source: National News Bureau of Thailand

BANGKOK, 7 July 2017 (NNT) - Thai and Cambodian labor ministers discussed a working guideline for the handling of migrant workers employment and preventing them from being victimized by human trafficking rackets.

Labor Minister Sirichai Distakul welcomed Cambodia's Minister of Labor and Vocational and Training Samheng and held talk on the Thai measures to legally employ migrant workers and address their problems.

The Cambodian labor minister agreed to the enactment of the new Thai law on the migrant workers employment, while the Cambodian authorities will expedite the issuing of 160,000 passports to Cambodian workers in Thailand within 100 days, and will speed up the nationality verification process.

The Cambodian counterpart called on Thailand to facilitate Cambodian nationals living in Thailand with no documents, who now need to conform to the special guideline from the Thai authorities requiring them to report themselves along with their employer at the provincial employment office during 24 July - 7 August 2017 in order to receive documents to allow them to travel back to their home country and obtain their passport. They will be then required to pass through the formal employment process in order to come back to work in Thailand.

Thailand also called on Cambodia to promote the measures among Cambodian migrant workers who are yet to be advised to cooperate with the authorities.
