The law was endorsed without any objection, with 138 lawmakers voting in favor and five abstaining.
Presenting the bill to the assembly, Chanvit Vasayangkura, chairman of the drafting committee, said the law is the revised version of the Municipal Act B.E. 2496 and contains 31 articles, one of which relates to the qualifications of candidates for the position of mayor and membership of the Municipal Council.
The new law also provides ethical codes for municipal officers to follow, helping them adhere to transparency, honesty, morality, and most importantly good governance.
The law stipulates that members of the Municipal Council must be at least 35 years of age. Each member can be elected to a four-year term, with a limit of two terms or a total of eight years. If the person wishes to run for office again after two consecutive terms in office, he or she must wait at least four years.
